The cyberpunk genre has always been one of my favorites. Akira is a very well known anime and I have never met anyone who understood it and didn't like Akira. The basic story of a punk kid and his gang going after each other is now taken to a new level. Instead of two gangs fighting its one punk kid trying to save the earth from his ex friend Tetsuo.
Akira is for no beginner. I watched it when I first found out about anime and did not understand it at all. Akira is an anime that you have to watch after you understand Japan's culture and religious views. If you don't understand it the first time, watch it again. The more you watch Akira, the more you catch the next time around.
The animation in Akira is the old style anime, of course it was made in the 80s. The graphics go well with the story and the dubbing is not that bad either. This is an anime I would choose to watch in English. The subtitles are pretty much dead on to what they are saying. Everything is done great in transfering this movie over into English. If you haven't seen it, go watch it right now! You won't regret it at all.
